About
You are invited to join highly experienced artist and teacher, Nik Pollard RCA, SWLA, on location at Folly Farm Nature Reserve for a very exciting one-day masterclass in making art en plein air. This day course is specially designed for individuals keen to improve and develop their art practice and the field-skills necessary for sustained, outside observation and art-making. Nik will introduce participants to this wonderful nature reserve, whilst supporting them to develop an observant and expressive response. Location: Folly Farm is Avon Wildlife Trust’s very special 250-acre nature reserve sited in the beautiful Chew Valley. In the spring and summer, Folly Farm comes alive, with native bluebells and rare wildflowers adorning this ancient woodland and meadow. This really is the perfect setting for outdoor painting. Participants will be met by Nik at the reserve carpark from 9.30am ready to start the workshop at 10am. Do I need to be an experienced artist? This workshop is designed for those wishing to improve their artistic practice and hone their skills in making work outside. Nik will support your decision making and help you navigate the practical issues of working in the woods. It is expected that participants will bring their own choice of materials to use during the day with Nik bringing basic drawing equipment. Participants will need to provide their own packed lunch and drinks. Toilet facilities are available at Folly Farm. The workshop will go ahead in all weather conditions unless we deem it necessary to postpone. It is greatly advisable that participants bring appropriate clothing for the time of year along with wet weather gear. Your tutor: Nik Pollard is an English artist based in Bristol, UK. His work is generated from sustained, direct observation with paintings and drawings often resolved in the field. A period of dedicated study at single or related locations is a necessary part of his process. Drawing from all the senses, he investigates the rhythms and characteristics of a location and its ecology, resulting in a sense of time and place. Working with a range of mediums, he focuses on the essential aspects of what it is that has drawn him to the subject.
